As part of London 360, the Community Channel has made a report on pirate radio. In it are expressed some very anti-pirate views, and there is no real conclusion to the report either. They do feature the pirates view a little, but it's as if Ofcom have said, 'put the emphasis on pirates being dangerous, illegal and obsolete because of net radio and DAB'. There is also a guy from Hackney failing to understand the difference between drugs and radio.

Rage FM website and stream back up and running

Rage FM have suffered a few technical problems with their stream in the last couple of weeks, but all is back to normal now.

Rage are not available in Bristol on FM AFAIK, although you may find them on 100.6 if you are in the far southern reaches and on a hill or something I guess. I would've recorded the guest DJ shows, but without the old online stream ripping server we had access to a while back, I can't do that and spend time with the missus simultaneously :/

I'm really enjoying listening, especially as there is nothing in Bristol on FM of interest at the moment (listening to Passion online isn't the same I find). Nice to know that pirate radio is still worth something outside of London / Essex / Midlands in the age of the net.

Only giving this one a mention because I'm about 10 mins walk from the studio where I live. It's testing right now and will be on 87.7 for the next couple of weeks whilst the BS Fest is on. No idea what we are going to hear, but the music on the test was pretty MOR. BCFM are involved in the training and I expect are helping with the technical side of things too. With any luck some of the local kids will be allowed to play some DnB or something.

Ofcom propaganda on 87.7 in London

Ofcom have been broadcasting their own propaganda message on 87.7 across parts of London...

We all know their game. Tell the public that pirate radio endangers lives and get them on Ofcom's side. There ARE some problems, agreed, but...

"There are no excuses for causing excess interferance. Yes you can expect a certain amount of de-sense to local receivers due to the relatively high signal levels produced by the output-transmitter. Good filtering of harmonics, and a well positioned aerial will sort out the vast majority of these problems. The authorities will claim that your equipment could cause interferance to the emergency services as it is not built to a high standard. This is un-true if you build and install your transmitters well and monitor their output for frequency stability, over-deviation, and harmonics.

I spent five years working for the radio section of the ambulance service and I never once had an interferance complaint tracable to a pirate station. Minicabs and french stations were the largest source of problems, and then second only to faults on our own kit or operator errors."

FACT : Community stations and even the BBC themselves have been known to interfere with things, it's the nature of radio. There are ways to avoid it and a pirate that cares will take measures to do that.

Irie FM (Midlands) raid caught on camera

LASER HOT HITS - 95.1FM - NE SOMERSET

I can't believe I've not mentioned this before, or if I have the search isn't working and I can't find my post about it. Laser Hot Hits, the famous UK SW Rock pirate, has an FM relay in NE Somerset on 95.1FM. Apparently it can be heard from about J18 of the M4 all the way to Clevedon. I can't hear it where I am, it may not be on when I try to tune in, but it's power has been increased recently according to the LHH website. It's odd that they don't use 95.2 as that is more directly between the two local BBC frequencies of 94.9 and 95.5, but as the 95.5 one is for Somerset I guess it's best to steer clear of it.

PASSION RADIO BRISTOL

Recent posters were advertising the 106.2FM frequency and since then there has been a rig confiscation which put the station off air for a few weeks. It came back on in the last week and I was listening to it earlier, but it seems to have disappeared now. However...

105FM???

I'm not even sure this is a positive, but tonight I'm getting a carrier jumping in and out on 105FM. Sounds a bit like somebody setting up a rig. Maybe Passion have decided to move frequency finally? Maybe it's the return of Ragga? Maybe it's something new? It could turn out to be some faulty equipment near me putting out a carrier.

UPDATE - Terry Star confirms there is a carrier on 105, although it's 'quite clear' where he is.

UPDATE - The rig on 105 was off by mid day on Friday 11th March. I have not heard it since, but I've been busy. No return of Passion on 106.2 either.

Multi FM 87.7

If you are interested, a temporary urban youth station called Multi-FM is this week on the air at 87.7 FM from studios in Kingswood featuring lots of dubstep, UK garage, grime and the suchlike. They have an RSL (restricted service license) for four days this week. Some of the material broadcast is full of swearing and references to cannabis, so we have a weird state of affairs whereby a legal station is airing rude material, whereas the main local pirate station, Passion Radio, has a policy of not playing disrespectful tracks.

Youngsters in South Gloucestershire have become radio broadcasters with the return this week of Multi FM.

The radio project is broadcasting from the Old School youth centre in Kingswood for the second year running after being granted a licence by Ofcom and will continue with interviews, live music and songs.

Those involved are aged between 12 and 20 and prepared for their week on air with help from Phil Gibbons, the station manager at Bristol Community Radio, and sound engineer Matt Thomas.

Guests turning up for interview include members of Bristol Rugby Club, while Kaman Miller, winner of the Best New Breakthrough Act at the 2008 UK Urban Music Awards, is hosting a regular slot.

The youth centre is run by South Gloucestershire Council and Councillor Sheila Cook, praised the efforts of the youngsters.

She said: "Multi FM is a fantastic project. It has enabled a group of young people to come together and create something they can be proud of, as well as learning new skills."

The station broadcasts on 87.7FM between noon and 10pm until Friday.

I'm posting this because it's something I got from Soulseek back in 2003 and I don't think it's the entire file. Soulseek tended to leave me with half of an mp3 as I was on dial-up and people would just disappear on me :( I can't find any reference to this particular mix on Google either, so I guess it's not out there. The quality is way above that of other WBMX mixes on the net (such as at Deep House Page mixes section), so it could even be that somebody recorded this on DAT or reel to reel off-air or even at the studio at the time of broadcast. I've got 40mins in all here, it cuts off really sharply though. Tracks include Yazoo 'Situation' and IMS 'Dancing Therapy'.

I found this tape with nothing written on it, so gave it a play. It contained various records for most of side a but after that it had loads of good early 90s house, techno and hardcore on it. Recorded from Kiss FM (London DXd in Bristol), Bacardi Beat Dance Chart, Tristan B on Galaxy 97.2, and Pete Tong's Essential Selection.

Bristol Wireless will be hosting a fascinating talk on UK Pirate Radio in the 1960’s and 70’s on Wednesday 14th Jan at 8pm in The Zoo Bar, St Werburghs Community Center.
Our Treasurer Julien Weston will be talking of how and why the pirate stations came about, their fascinating and ongoing conflict with the UK government and the draconian measures the government eventually took to get the North Sea broadcasters off the air once and for all. The talk will feature original sounds from many of the pirate stations and stunning images from the North Sea. Julien tells us his talk will cover the ships, the transmitters, the music, the people – and unfortunately, the authorities. He will also reveal some curiosities such as why the pirate radio story really starts in 1660, how the UK government can still “legally” pursue its citizens anywhere in the world and what the link is between the radio pirates and the Lockerbie bombing of Pan-Am Flight 103. The Bristol Wireless bar will be open on the evening for your refreshment with all proceeds going to the Bristol Wireless project. The talk will last for one hour with plenty of time for questions and answers afterwards.

Just ripped this corker. Techno and Electro from the Baron of Techno. I think copies of this are around in other people's collections, but I can't find any on the net at the moment. This is most likely to be 1996, as I checked out some of the tracks on Discogs and they were 96ers. So, ignore the filename, it's 1996ish ;) Banging, as they say.

His presentation is so pirate too ;) That may be why he didn't get a full time show in the end.

Another one of those compilation tapes that my mate used to do. This one was really badly recorded, so lots of heavy noise reduction has been used. None of the clips reveal which station they were recorded from, lots of them have no talking at all on them. It's mostly Ultramagnetic MCs stuff too, but I've decided to rip the whole thing instead of just the bits I wanted to keep.

Garage FM was run by Richie V and the V2 crew from Cardiff and had a big signal (for this part of the country) that reached the North of Bristol. Here is 45 mins from Marlon 'Killa' B and Richie 'Vibe' V himself.

Not pirate, not in Bristol, but worth a mention. They've been going since Nov 2005 on RSLs. It's typical small town RSL stuff really, but the DJs aren't too unprofessional and there is an interesting selection of shows. This year, they've increased their reach to a bit more of South Gloucestershire and some parts of North Bristol. There are even ads for Flingers in Patchway! Here's an hour long clip...

KWBB - Knowle West Bad Boys - I'm told that Tricky and 3D ran this station from Knowle West, and it was smashed up by a crew from Bedminster. From there it was set up in Barton Hill and John Nation was possibly involved. Any information appreciated, especially recorded evidence of the station.

BBC - Bedminster Badboys Company - These were apparently the guys that smashed up the KWBB studio. They were also behind the Twisted free parties. The station was on air at the same time as those parties, so around 1992, and was the way to find out about them. Once again, any more information appreciated, especially recordings.

Isherman (spelling?) - I've been told this pirate is / was on air in Easton, probably on low power, about 1 to 4 watts I guess. I've seen the guy that told me about it a couple of times and his story hasn't changed, so it's possible it really does exist.

Weston Sound - This was in W-S-M and was run as a holiday station from a caravan site, any more info and recordings would be welcomed.

When you've been hunting down information for things and a few times you find out that you've been spun a little lie, you tend to get a bit more cynical about what you believe, so apologies if I seem like I don't believe you when you tell me information ;) I just have to take things with a pinch of salt.

TAPES - Still looking for tapes here, especially of the earlier pirates such as BAD, FTP, Emergency, RAW 104.9, SYT, Radio 103.5, etc...

Last night, I managed to get the rest of my tapes from my parents loft and there was actually 3 times the amount I was expecting! Not all of them contain radio recordings, of course, some are pre-recorded or albums / tunes, but that still leaves about half of what I got to go through and retrieve radio from. Amongst the tapes were recordings I thought I'd lost by recording over them stupidly, or never even knew I had. These include half a D90 of Garage FM from Cardiff and almost 2 whole tapes of Storm FM from 2001. I've just found what appears to be another Sub Love set from Tristan B's show on Galaxy (1992) too, so lots of surprises waiting to be discovered in this bin liner full of tapes I reckon :)

Interference FM Mayday 2000

There is already an article on Interference FM on The Pirate Archive, but there have been no tapes found until recently. First, I've had an offer from Dub Revolution to collect some shows on cassette (which I WILL get around to when I can). Art and Sound of the Bristol Underground feat. Emergency Radio

A new book by Chris Burton and Gary Thompson has been published by Tanget Books and was launched at the Arnolfini on Thurday 22nd October. It's titled 'Art & Sound of the Bristol Underground' and features interviews with many local musicians from the 1980s, as well as graf artists from the same period. Club flyers and other artworks are also featured alongside the interviews.

The best thing about the book is that it features Paul Hassan talking about Emergency Radio and giving the short version of it's story.

Overall, the book is an excellent read for anybody who was there or is interested in the history of the Bristol music scene during the 80s.

Ivanhoe Campbell (Severn Sound)

In the days before I could pick up most of the pirates and had to travel into town a bit to hear them, I used to tune in to whatever I could find on legal radio. Now, despite not being of the caliber of the pirate shows most of the time, some of these shows were damn fine. In particular, Ivanhoe Campbell's reggae show on Severn Sound, which I could just about receive all the way from Gloucester, was excellent. This is a tape I used to listen to quite a bit at the time, with some killer tunes on it IMHO, from late 89, early 1990 I guess.

Ivanhoe became ill and died in February 2003 unfortunately. I have ripped this tape partly for a show about Ivanhoe that is to be broadcast on local Gloucester station, GFM in the near future. I hope some of it gets used.
